Terms of Service

These are the terms for using Altar. We've written them in plain English on purpose — if anything is unclear, ask us at support@altardigital.ai before agreeing to it.

1. What Altar is

Altar is an online memorial service operated from Southern California. It lets families create, build together, and preserve memorials for people they love. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy.

2. Your account

Keep your sign-in details safe and give us accurate contact information — it's how we reach you about the memorials in your care. You are responsible for activity that happens under your account. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account.

3. Your content — and who owns it

Your family owns its content. Every story, photo, and message you add remains yours. You give us only the permission we need to operate the service: to store your content, display it to the people you've chosen, and back it up. That permission ends when the content is deleted.

When you add content about or photos of other people, you are responsible for having the right to share them. When you invite family members to contribute, their contributions appear only after you approve them.

4. Memorial standards

Memorials are spaces of remembrance. Content that harasses, defames, threatens, or is unlawful is not allowed anywhere on Altar, and we may remove it or suspend the account responsible. If you believe a memorial or guestbook entry violates these standards — or memorializes someone without the family's blessing — contact us at support@altardigital.ai and a human will look at it promptly.

5. Payments

• Preserving a memorial is a one-time payment. There is no subscription and no renewal. What that payment guarantees is described in our Preservation Promise, which is part of these terms.
• Refunds are covered by our Refund Policy — 30 days, no questions asked, for memorial preservation purchases.
• Funeral home partner plans are monthly or annual subscriptions that may be cancelled at any time; access continues to the end of the paid period.
• Payments are processed by Stripe. Prices are shown before you pay and don't change after you've paid.

6. Ending things

You can deactivate your account at any time in account settings, or ask us to delete your account and content entirely. We can suspend or close accounts that violate these terms; if that ever happens, published memorials created in good faith are handled with care — we will contact the family before anything is removed, except where content is unlawful.

7. Honest limits

We work hard to keep Altar available and your content safe, and our commitments in the Preservation Promise are ones we stand behind. Beyond those commitments, the service is provided "as is": we can't guarantee uninterrupted availability, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you have paid us. Nothing in these terms limits rights that the law does not allow us to limit.

8. Changes to these terms

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will email account holders before the change takes effect. Continuing to use Altar after that means you accept the updated terms.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, United States.
